Review: 2013 Academy Awards picks

For the past five months, the awards race has been in play. Now it all comes to an end. This Sunday night, the 85th Academy of Motion Pictures Awards, a.k.a. the Oscars, will wrap-up one of the most surprising and enjoyable years of film to date.

While a front-runner consensus is still to be undecided in many categories,-uncharacteristic this close to awards night- the debates fervently rage on. Predictions change with each new development in the race and opinions rarely have held true for more than a few days at a time.

Mason baseball routs Iona, 12-3 in first home game

The George Mason baseball team opened their first home series against Iona University (1-3) on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax. But the frigid, and at times, icy conditions didn’t cool down the hot bats of the Patriots (1-3), who collected 13 hits and scored a season-high 12 runs to defeat the Gaels, 12-3.

Mason junior pitcher Anthony Montefusco made the start, allowing one run on four hits through five innings while striking out seven.

OPINION: Why sequestration is problematic

The United States cannot sustainably spend more money than it takes in—period. There will be a point where we are so tragically in debt, countries will stop buying our bonds and investing in the American economy. At the point that the world recognizes our budgetary issues cause us to be an unsustainable black hole, America itself will lose potency and further degrade its reputation.

Mason campuses experience growing pains with new construction

Faculty and staff hoping to move into the new Health and Human Services building next semester will have to wait a little longer.

While the building was one of Mason’s top priorities, the project has been put on hold for a year. The building, expected to house the Health and Human Services department, did not secure the necessary funding to complete the project.

OPINION: GMU Confessions and the effects of anonymity

With almost four thousand “likes,” the newly created Facebook page GMU Confessions has practically overrun the campus. It distracts students everywhere from their responsibilities and replaces them with hours of off-color entertainment and hilarious conversational topics. The confessions are so widely viewed that an oatmeal epidemic, shall we say, has stemmed from one unfortunate person’s account of their roommate’s blatant misuse of the breakfast product.

Prior to boarding the team bus and heading south to Charleston, S.C. for The Citadel Memorial Challenge, George Mason University baseball coach Bill Brown, entering his 33rd season, sat in his office looking over some papers in preparation for the 2013 season.

For Brown, who has coached the Patriots to 873 wins throughout his tenure, the expectations for the upcoming season were the same as they have been in years past.

On Sunday, Feb. 17, people from all over the nation gathered on the National Mall to hold a climate change rally. This event was called, “Forward on Climate.” Battling through extremely low temperatures and freezing wind chills, over 30,000 people made sure President Obama heard their voices. Rest assured that a major statement was made on President’s Day: from marching up and down the National Mall to chanting for a fight against climate, the crowd made their presence and their cause known. Many students and staff members from our very own George Mason University were present on this historical day.

Q & A with former Mason and current Miami men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga

Could you ever have imagined having the level of success this season in only your second year at University of Miami?

JL: We thought we were capable last year but injuries and suspensions set us back. I thought we had a great chance this season and I even told the Board of Trustees that I thought we would have the best season in Miami basketball history.

Have you seen a substantial difference in the level of competition in the ACC, not just on the floor, but in terms of recruiting?
